Introducing S.P.O.N.G.E – the online navigation guide for European sponge projects
The SpongeBoost project launched a new database, S.P.O.N.G.E (Sponge Projects Online Navigation Guide Europe), developed by project partners at Bureau Stroming. The platform aims to function as a portal to sponge projects and measures from 9 existing major international databases from the projects, REWET, WaterLands, NWRM, SER, WOCAT, MERLIN, Alfawetlands, Restore4cs, and WET HORIZONS – alongside new case studies from the SpongeBoost consortium.
The database already includes a catalogue of best practices, along with relevant articles and papers, as well as 147 projects and 60 measures. Together, these create a geographical overview of initiatives that restore or enhance landscapes’ natural water retention – their “sponge function.” Projects range from large-scale nature reserve restorations to smaller, localised measures such as ponds, hedgerows, or no-tillage farming.
Designed to grow, the database will be regularly updated during the SpongeBoost project and beyond. Users can not only browse existing projects but also submit new ones, ensuring the platform evolves with Europe’s water management efforts.
